Matt BrewerBack to career stories
After graduating from university in 2014, I undertook a work experience placement with Awdry Bailey & Douglas in order to obtain hands on experience into the workings of a busy legal practice.
During this placement, I spent time working in the accounts department. Arriving straight from university with a small amount of experience in the legal industry, this was a fantastic opportunity to witness a widespread range of legal activity and to develop invaluable skills involving the financial and organisational side of a top Wiltshire law firm.
This experience enabled me to strengthen my communication and organisational skills as well as providing me with a new found confidence which has help immensely with my legal career.
Having the opportunity to experience the fast paced and pressurised conveyancing work that the accounts department handles, led me to realise that property law is a discipline that I wanted to explore further. I was later encouraged to progress into the role of a trainee fee earner and I started to take on more responsibility and manage a small case load of my own whilst still under the guidance of the head of residential conveyancing.
After showing that I could manage my own case load, I was rewarded with a training contract which commenced in August 2015.
Working at Awdry Bailey & Douglas is a challenging yet rewarding opportunity and one that I thoroughly enjoy. Awdry Bailey & Douglas has given me the opportunity to gain hands on experience of complex legal matters whilst having the full support of senior colleagues.
There is a clear ‘open door’ management approach which has given me the confidence to ask for help when required. I also believe that Awdry Bailey & Douglas is attentive in continuous career development and I am looking forward to progressing with my career in the future.
